Bluegrass revivals by young urban Americans come around once every couple of years, but rarely as brightly as this debut from Boston five-piece Joy Kills Sorrow. Those twenty-somethings should be able to get by on instrumental mastery alone, but they have much more going for them than hot fingers. Their signature feature is the fine, piercing voice of lead singer Emma Beaton, who brings a welcome female touch to a sound that can often be unduly masculine. This stringband brings a decidedly modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs.
